PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Marion’s Run Apartments, a new residential development on S-33 (Clements Ferry Road), with its entrance located across from Clements Ferry Road/Legrande Boulevard intersection, required a left turn lane and right turn lane for its entrance. The engineer-of-record for the new development submitted an encroachment permit for the turn lanes and new entrance, and after receiving the initial comments on the encroachment permit, contacted J. Bragg Consulting to perform the roadway and drainage design to SCDOT’s standards and specifications for plan development and addressing comments for the approval for the encroachment permit.
CHALLENGES: The prime consultant had submitted for the encroachment permit and this was an expedited schedule. The roadway plans were developed to address SCDOT’s comments in less than two weeks. This included analyzing the closed drainage system to verify the added impervious area for the right turn lane would not negatively impact SCDOT’s systems or its discharges.
RESPONSIBILITIES: J. Bragg Consulting performed roadway and drainage design for the improvements on S-33 (Clements Ferry Road) and approximately 60 LF for the entrance road (Corby Lane). The final construction plans included sight distance detail for the new entrance, typical section sheet, general construction notes, plan and profile sheets, pavement marking and sign plans, maintenance of traffic plans, pre- and post-drainage information for S-33, erosion control information, cross sections.
The plans were prepared to SCDOT’s standards and were tied to the 5-lane curb & gutter widening plans as the construction for S-33 (Clements Ferry Road) was completed in summer 2019. The original centerline and relocated centerline were stored for S-33 as well as the centerline for Legrande Boulevard, as shown on the construction plans. The new centerline for Corby Lane was tied to these centerlines. Documentation was also provided to address the offset intersection for Corby Lane/Legrande Boulevard.
